Fish are the perfect first pet - peaceful, beautiful and relaxing to watch. But a healthy aquarium isn't just water and a fish; it's a tiny ecosystem. Here's exactly how to build it right the first time.

Step 1: Pick the right tank size

Here's the surprising secret: bigger is easier. A 10-20 gallon tank stays more stable than a tiny bowl. Small tanks swing wildly in temperature and chemistry, which stresses fish.

🐾 Pro tip Never start with a fishbowl. A 10-gallon rectangular tank is the sweet spot for beginners.

Step 2: Gear checklist

Step 3: The nitrogen cycle - the part everyone skips

This is the difference between thriving fish and sick fish. When fish produce waste, it becomes ammonia (toxic). Beneficial bacteria grow in the filter that convert ammonia → nitrite → nitrate (safe). Growing those bacteria takes 4-8 weeks and is called "cycling."

To cycle: set up the tank, add a pinch of fish food daily (or pure ammonia), and test every few days. When ammonia and nitrite read 0, the tank is cycled and ready for fish.

⚠️ Patience pays Adding fish to an un-cycled tank is the #1 beginner mistake - it makes them sick or worse. Wait for the cycle.

Step 4: Add fish slowly

Start with 3-5 hardy fish. Rule of thumb: about 2.5 cm (1 inch) of fish per 4 litres (1 gallon). Add a few, wait two weeks, then add more.

Step 5: Best first fish

Step 6: Weekly maintenance

Set it up right, stay patient through the cycle, and your aquarium will be a calm, colourful corner of your home for years. 🐠
