Hamster Care: The Complete Starter Guide

Hamsters are tiny, adorable and endlessly entertaining - the perfect first pet for small spaces. But "easy to care for" only stays true when you set things up right. Here's the complete guide from day one.

Cute hamster exploring a spacious cage setup with bedding and a wheel
A roomy cage with deep bedding and a proper wheel is essential for hamster health.

Step 1: Choose the right cage

Step 2: The wheel - size really matters

⚠️ Tiny wheels hurt If the back arches when they run, the wheel is too small. Syrian hamsters need 25-30 cm (10-12 in); dwarfs need at least 18 cm (7 in). A solid surface wheel is gentler on feet than wire ones.

Step 3: Food & water

Step 4: Handling - earn their trust

Hamsters are prey animals, so sudden grabs scare them. Give them 2-3 days to settle before handling.

  1. Sit calmly beside the cage and talk softly for a few minutes a day.
  2. Offer a treat through the bars so they learn your smell means good things.
  3. Let them sniff and step onto your hand (scoop from below, never from above).
  4. Keep sessions short and always supervised.

Step 5: Daily & weekly routine

🐾 Pro tip Keep the cage away from direct sunlight, draughts and noisy TVs. A calm spot = a calm, confident hamster.

With a roomy cage, a proper wheel and patient handling, your tiny friend will live a happy, healthy 2-3 years of zoomies and cheek-puffing. 🐹
