The Cat Litter Box Guide: Keep It Clean, Keep It Odor-Free

Cats are clean animals - far cleaner than we give them credit for. When they stop using the litter box, it's almost never "misbehavior". It's a message: something about the box is wrong. Learn what cats actually want and most problems disappear.
The one-box-per-cat-plus-one rule
The golden rule: one box per cat, plus one extra. Two cats = three boxes. Cats in a multi-cat home feel safer with options, and a single shared box is a top cause of accidents.
Placement beats everything
- Put boxes in quiet, low-traffic areas - not next to the washing machine
- Never trap the box in a dead-end corner with one exit
- Keep boxes away from food and water bowls
- One box on each floor if you have a multi-level home
Scoop daily, deep clean weekly
Scooping twice a day is ideal; once a day is the minimum. Empty and wash the whole box with warm water and mild soap weekly - never bleach or ammonia scents, which smell like marking to a cat.
Pick the right litter
- Unscented, clumping clay is the default winner for most cats
- Pine, paper or silica pellets work well for sensitive paws
- Avoid heavy perfume - it's for humans, not cats
- Keep litter depth around 2 inches (5 cm), no more
Fix the setup, keep the schedule, and most litter box drama evaporates. Your cat will reward you with a box that never gets "mysteriously" missed.
