Aquarium Water Quality: The Beginner's Complete Guide

Here's the truth they don't put on fish packaging: you don't keep fish, you keep water. The fish just live in the result. Master a few water basics and your fish will thrive; ignore them and no amount of feeding will save them.
The nitrogen cycle (the #1 concept)
Fish waste becomes ammonia (toxic). Bacteria turn ammonia into nitrite (also toxic), then into nitrate (harmless at low levels). A tank is only "cycled" when those bacteria are established - which takes 4-8 weeks. Never add fish to a brand-new, uncycled tank.
🐾 Cycle with fish food
Drop a pinch of fish food into an empty running tank and wait 4-6 weeks, testing weekly, until ammonia and nitrite read zero. That's the safe way to cycle before fish arrive.
The three test numbers
- Ammonia: always 0. Any reading above 0 means your cycle is broken or overstocked.
- Nitrite: always 0.
- Nitrate: below 40 ppm (ideally under 20) - reduced by weekly water changes.
The weekly routine
- Change 25-30% of the water every week
- Dechlorinate tap water before it touches the tank
- Clean the filter media in old tank water (not tap water)
- Test ammonia and nitrite weekly, pH monthly
- Keep temperature stable - sudden swings stress fish more than anything
⚠️ Never "reboot" the tank
Don't do a full tear-down clean or replace filter media all at once. You'll nuke the good bacteria and crash the cycle, which is how mass fish deaths happen.
Test, change water weekly, and keep it simple. Aquarium keeping is 80% chemistry habits and 20% everything else - get the water right and the fish take care of themselves.
