Hamster Cage Cleaning: How Often & the Right Way

Hamsters have a weird paradox: they love a clean home, but a full redo stresses them out. Their entire world is their cage, and their scent map lives in the bedding. The trick is a steady rhythm of small cleans instead of dramatic overhauls.
The spot-clean (every 2-3 days)
- Remove wet bedding and food waste
- Scoop and refresh the bathroom corner if they've chosen one
- Remove leftover fresh food before it rots
- Top up water and give it a quick rinse
The deep clean (every 2-4 weeks)
- Move your hamster to a safe travel carrier or playpen
- Remove all bedding and empty the cage
- Wash with warm water and a little mild dish soap - no bleach, no strong smells
- Rinse thoroughly and dry completely
- Add fresh bedding, but keep one handful of the OLD bedding
- Put the cage back and return your hamster
🐾 The old-bedding secret
Always mix in a bit of old bedding after a deep clean. Their scent stays, which means way less stress and re-marking. A hamster that re-explores calmly is a hamster that feels at home.
⚠️ Don't wash the wheel like it's a crime scene
A wheel should be cleaned when dirty, not on a fixed schedule. Some hamsters scent-mark wheels heavily - stripping that scent can cause them to refuse the wheel or become anxious.
Clean often enough to stay hygienic, rarely enough to keep their scent. Master that balance and your hamster stays calm, healthy and happy.
